The Lord Is Their Refuge
Today’s Text:
Psalm 14 (WEB) — For the Chief Musician. By David. 1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt. They have done abominable deeds. There is no one who does good. 2 Yahweh looked down from heaven on the children of men, to see if there were any who understood, who sought after God. 3 They have all gone aside. They have together become corrupt. There is no one who does good, no, not one. 4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and don’t call on Yahweh? 5 There they were in great fear, for God is in the generation of the righteous. 6 You frustrate the plan of the poor, because Yahweh is his refuge. 7 Oh that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When Yahweh restores the fortunes of his people, then Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
1. What is happening in this passage?
The psalmist laments the fact that it seems like the whole world is filled with evildoers oppressing the righteous— Those who are overwhelmed with sin. The psalmist rests assured that God will judge the evildoers, but will be the refuge of the righteous.
2. What is God revealing about humanity?
The whole world has a propensity for total evil, culminating in a total abandonment of God and devouring of God’s people. This is our default without God and seeking after Him.
3. What is God revealing about Himself?
God searches all hearts to see who will seek Him. He is with the righteous and becomes their refuge. He will restore His people (those who seek Him).
4. How should our lives change?
When it seems the whole world is against us, we must remember God is with those who seek Him. We find restoration and refuge through seeking God with our whole being. How are you seeking God today?
